What are the first steps I should take when I find out my swordtail fish is pregnant?

The first step you can take is to separate the pregnant fish from its community or put aquatic plants as hiding places for the fry.

What is certain when you find out the fish is pregnant is NOT TO PANIC. Stay calm, and move the mother, who is about to give birth to the fry, to another aquarium. After that, the female parent should be moved again so the female parent does not eat the fry.

These peaceful fish should be cared for at water temperatures between 70° F and 82° F, pH 7.0-8.0, with a minimum tank size of 15 gallons.
